A neat-looking gutter can still contain leaves and moss. Equally, an overflow does not always mean a blockage: a damaged joint or another drainage fault can need a repair. Here is how to describe the problem and request the right service.
IN THIS GUIDE
When should you book gutter clearing?
Use an annual check as a starting point and take account of what collects around your home. NHBC’s homeowner guide recommends cleaning gutters out at least once a year. After nearby trees have shed their leaves is a practical time to review whether a clear is needed.
Do not wait for the next planned visit if water is repeatedly spilling over. Observe from a safe position at ground level and tell the cleaner where it happens. A front gutter that seems clear says little about an inaccessible rear run.

What are the signs of blocked gutters?
Visible vegetation, a pile of leaves near an outlet or recurring overflow are useful reasons to request an assessment. Describe what you have actually seen rather than assuming the cause. A leak at one connection may need repair even after debris has been removed.
- Water regularly spilling over a particular gutter section.
- Leaves, moss or plants visible in the channel.
- Debris collecting beneath an outlet after rain.
- A recurring wet patch below the same part of the roofline.
Gutter clearing vs gutter cleaning: what is the difference?
Internal clearing removes accumulated debris from the gutter channel. Exterior washing cleans the outside face of the gutter and is primarily about its appearance. The same word, “cleaning”, is often used for both, so spell out what you need when requesting a quote.
Pane and Simple’s enquiry options separate internal clearing and exterior washing. Downpipe clearing is an extra to discuss. If you also want the boards under the roof edge washed, ask about fascia and soffit cleaning rather than assuming it is included.
How do you estimate the length of guttering?
List the runs you want included and estimate their lengths from ground level. Two straight runs of about eight metres each give an approximate total of 16 metres. Add a porch, extension or conservatory only if you want its guttering included too.
A detached property can have more runs than a terrace, but property type alone is not an accurate measurement. Mention side returns, unusual height and restricted access. Approximate information is enough to start a discussion; do not climb a ladder simply to obtain a quote.
What should you send for a local gutter quote?
Give Pane and Simple your postcode, the approximate total length, building height and whether you want clearing, exterior washing or both. Describe overflowing sections and any access over an extension. If safe ground-level photographs are available, mention that you can email them.
For homes around Waterlooville, Havant, Horndean and Clanfield, and the wider service area, we will discuss the scope and access before confirming work. Cleaning is not a substitute for repairing a broken gutter or diagnosing a building defect.
More questions
Will cleaning fix every gutter leak?
No. Removing a blockage may address an overflow, but damaged joints, loose components or other faults can need repair. Explain the symptoms when enquiring.
Are downpipes included?
Downpipe clearing is an extra in the enquiry options. Ask which downpipes and outlets will be covered.
Can gutters and fascias be cleaned together?
Request both services and identify the runs you want included. Internal gutter clearing and external roofline washing have different scopes.
